The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Kenny was walking in a parade on North Miller Drive in Sunbury when he fell and was struck by a trailer.

SUNBURY, Ohio – An 11-year-old Big Walnut Local School student who was seriously injured during Friday’s homecoming parade is still being treated at General Republican Children’s Hospital.

The family confirmed to 10TV that the boy’s name is Kenneth, but he goes by the name Kenny.

Kenny’s aunt said he underwent another operation Sunday night and finally started showing signs of responding through nodding his head and wringing his hands. She said he initially went into surgery for an aneurysm and also had a ruptured liver, a collapsed lung, several broken ribs and several facial fractures.

His family says Kenny is a fighter, but he still has a long road to recovery.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Kenny was walking in a parade on North Miller Drive in Sunbury when he fell and was struck by the tires of a trailer being pulled by a Ford F350.

After the incident, he was taken to Nationwide Children’s in critical condition.

Kenny’s family said they are overwhelmed by the community’s support. A GoFundMe a page to raise money for his medical expenses raised more than $75,000.

Big Walnut Local Schools will have counselors available Monday to provide support to students and staff, according to Superintendent Ryan McLain.

“I want to thank our staff, students and community members who were on the scene and assisted when the incident occurred, as well as Delaware County EMS, BST&G Fire, Sunbury Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol,” Big Walnut McLane said in a written statement Saturday.

McLain left a voice message with area families asking them to send Kenny and his family “positive vibes.”

The family will be holding a prayer vigil in Sunbury this week. The time and venue have not yet been announced.
