The Apple iPhone 14 series will be the only iPhones to receive satellite connectivity.

According to Apple, Emergency SOS via satellite will be available to users in the US and Canada in November, and the service will be free for two years.

Apple is preparing to demo its satellite emergency call feature with the release of iOS 16.1 for iPhone 14 users. The iOS 16.1 update will include a “Satellite Connection Demo” so users can try out a satellite connection without calling emergency services.

The company released iOS 16.1 beta 3 for developers. With this feature, users will be able to see how Emergency SOS works via satellite without having to travel to a remote area with no Wi-Fi or cellular signal, according to 9to5Mac. An update to Emergency SOS via Satellite is expected to be released in October, with satellite features available in November.

The Satellite Link Demo can be accessed at any time via the emergency call menu in the Settings app as soon as it becomes available. The iOS 16.1 update also includes a clean energy charging option, Live Activities API, early support for the Matter protocol, and the ability to remove the Wallet app.

Emergency SOS via satellite combines special components deeply integrated with the software to allow antennas to connect directly to the satellite, enabling messages to be exchanged with emergency services when out of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
