1,700 missing after earthquake in Ecuador


A strong earthquake struck the region around Ecuador’s second-largest city on Saturday, killing at least twelve people, damaging homes and buildings, and sending panicked residents into the streets.

The US Geological Survey reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 in the coastal region of Guayas. It was about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Guayaquil, which connects a metropolitan area with more than 3 million people.

The South American country’s emergency response agency, the Secretariat of Risk Management, said one person died in the Andean community of Cuenca. The deceased was a passenger in a car that was buried under the rubble of a house.

In Guayaquil, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Quito, authorities reported cracks in buildings and houses and collapsed walls. The authorities ordered the closure of three car tunnels.

Videos shared on social media showed people gathering on the streets of Guayaquil and nearby communities. People have reported falling objects in their homes.

A pier sank in the town of Machala. The earthquake was also felt in northern Peru.
