Police issued a statement Monday night on Twitter, saying there was only one suspect. It is not known if anyone is in custody.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Three people were killed and at least five others were injured in a shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing Monday night.

MSU Interim Deputy Chief Chris Roseman said dispatch began receiving calls about 8:18 p.m. about shots fired in Berkey Hall.

Arriving police officers found several victims in the building. Roseman said there was another report of gunfire in a nearby building. Officers tended to the victims at both locations.

At least five victims were taken to an area hospital, some with life-threatening injuries. The three victims who died were in addition to the five victims who were taken to the hospital.

The suspect, who is still at large, is described as a short man wearing red shoes, a denim jacket and a baseball cap. MSU police released photos of the suspect just before 11:20 p.m

Students and staff must remain in place.

Roseman asks parents not to come to campus.

The gunfire alert was sent shortly after 8:30 p.m. The warning advised students and staff to “immediately secure a position and observe alert.msu.edu for information.”

By 10:15 p.m., police said Berkey, as well as nearby dormitories, were secured.

All classes and sporting events for the next 48 hours have been cancelled.

Aidan Kelly, a junior who lives half a mile (less than a kilometer) east of campus, said he locked his doors and closed his windows “just in case.” Sirens were constant, he said, and a helicopter hovered overhead.

“It’s all very scary,” Kelly said. “And then all these people are texting me asking if I’m OK, and it’s overwhelming.”

Michigan State has about 50,000 students. East Lansing is about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.

The East Lansing High School auditorium, where a school board meeting was held Monday night, was locked down and police were preventing people from leaving, the Lansing State Journal reported.
