Falcons Triumph in Overtime Thanks to Undrafted HBCU Wide Receiver’s Game-Winning Touchdown

The idea that HBCU football players aren’t ready for the big leagues was proven wrong during Thursday night’s nail-biting game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Undrafted free agent wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge delivered a walk-off touchdown that sealed the Falcons’ thrilling victory.

Hodge, a former Prairie View Panther, found himself in a critical moment after the Falcons’ top receiver, Drake London, was sidelined due to injury. Stepping into the lineup, Hodge caught the game-winning touchdown in a match that ended with a 36-30 overtime score, propelling Atlanta to the division lead over the Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints.

On the pivotal play, Hodge ran a five-yard dig route that Kirk Cousins connected with at the 40-yard line. Buccaneers defensive back Zyon McCollum attempted to dislodge the ball, but that proved to be a costly mistake. Hodge quickly pivoted, exploited a gap in the Bucs’ secondary, and sprinted to the end zone for a memorable 45-yard touchdown reception at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, bringing Atlanta’s record to 3-2 for the season.

Celebrating his achievement, Hodge took to social media, stating, “I’m trying to hold it in. God is real. Y’all stay behind us. We’re on to the next. What a game!” In addition to his heroics, Hodge finished with two receptions for 67 yards in a game where Cousins completed 42 of 58 passes for 509 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception.

The Falcons’ defense also deserves recognition for their strong performance, limiting Tampa Bay to just six points in the second half after leading 24-17 at halftime. Their defensive efforts were crucial in securing the win.

Before making his mark in the NFL as an undrafted free agent, Hodge played at two HBCUs: Alcorn State (2013) and Prairie View A&M (2015-2017). He has been with the Falcons since 2022, following stints with the Rams (2018), Browns (2019-2020), and Lions (2021). This offseason, he signed a one-year deal to remain in Atlanta.

In his NFL career, Hodge has participated in 72 games, recording 43 receptions for 632 yards and one touchdown. During his time at Prairie View A&M, he accumulated 104 catches for 1,797 yards and 21 touchdowns, earning All-SWAC First Team honors in his senior year.
