On March 17, Perrigo, the third largest manufacturer of baby formula in the US and Canada, released voluntary recall of certain batches of its Gerber Good Start SoothePro dry infant formula in the U.S. The company has recalled the product out of an abundance of caution due to the potential presence Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria.
Cronobacter sakazakii is a microbe that occurs naturally in the environment. It can cause serious illness, especially among babies under 2 months of age, as well as those born prematurely, with weakened immune systems or with low birth weight, according to US Food and Drug Administration and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Cronobacter infections are rare, but they can be life-threatening in newborns. Infections in infants usually occur in the first days or weeks of life,” the CDC said site.
Cronobacter disease in infants usually begins with fever and poor feeding, excessive crying, or very low energy. Some babies may also have seizures. If your baby shows any of these symptoms, the CDC says you should take him to the doctor as soon as possible.
In its March 17 recall notice, Perrigo said the formula was manufactured at the company’s facility in Eau Claire, Wis., from Jan. 2, 2023, to Jan. 18, 2023. The recalled formula was sold in three different sizes at retail chains nationwide .
The company noted that none of the distributed products tested positive for the bacteria, no adverse effects were reported, and no other products manufactured at the facility or other Perrigo facilities were affected. Click here for more information about the recalled products.
Nearly two months after issuing the initial recall notice, Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc., a cooperative grocery wholesaler that distributes products to independent supermarkets, released an additional message May 13, which was shared by the FDA.
