COLUMBUS, OH – Drug Enforcement Administration seized more than 50.6 million counterfeit prescription pills and more than 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder in 2022.
In Michigan, Ohio and Northern Kentucky alone, officers seized more than 28,000 fentanyl pills and more than 600 pounds of fentanyl powder — more than 19 million lethal doses.
The DEA estimates that the drugs seized nationwide amount to more than 379 million potentially lethal doses of fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is highly addictive and 50 times stronger than heroin, and is considered the deadliest drug threat to the United States.
The DEA has said its top priority is to take down two Mexican drug cartels, the Sinaloa and Jalisco Cartel (CJNG), which are primarily responsible for the fentanyl that is killing Americans.
Most of the fentanyl sold by the Sinaloa and CJNG cartels is mass-produced in secret plants in Mexico with chemicals sourced mainly from China. In 2021, the DEA issued a public safety alert about the widespread trafficking of the drug fentanyl in the form of counterfeit prescription pills.
The pills are made to look identical to real prescription drugs, including OxyContin, Percocet and Xanax, but contain only the filler and fentanyl and are often deadly.
In 2022, the DEA seized more than twice as many counterfeit fentanyl prescription pills than in 2021. The DEA also seized nearly 131,000 pounds of methamphetamine, more than 4,300 pounds of heroin and more than 444,000 pounds of cocaine.
