WTOL 11 opened a news release at 6pm on Wednesday with a list of shootings in U.S. schools over the past two decades and the death toll.

TALEDA, Ohio – You may have noticed something unusual in the WTOL news release at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

We wanted to admit – in a day 19 students and one teacher were killed at a Texas elementary school – the damage done by school shootings in the United States.

During the broadcast, viewers saw at the bottom of the screen a list of tragedies detailing the lives of those killed in school shootings over the past two decades, when they occurred, where they occurred and how many lives were cut short.

According to the Associated Press, prior to the 1999 Columbine Massacre, the number of people killed in school shootings in the United States was unequivocal. Since then, the number of shootings has increased, involving schools and killing 10 or more people.

Here are some of the deadliest school shootings in American history.

Santa Fe High School

A shooting that took place in the Houston metropolitan area on May 18, 2018, killed ten people, including eight students and two teachers. Another 13 people were injured. A 17-year-old schoolgirl has been taken into custody and charged with murder.

Margery Stoneman Douglas

On February 14, 2018, a 20-year-old suspect opened fire on students and staff of Margery Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He killed 17 people and injured 17 others. It is the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. He was soon arrested and remains in prison.

Umpqua Community College

On October 1, 2015, a man killed nine people at a school in Roseburg, Oregon, and injured nine others and then killed himself.

19-year-old boy shot 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. He killed his mother at their home in Newton, Connecticut, before sneaking into elementary school. He then killed himself.

Oikos University

The shooter opened fire on Fr. Korean Christian College in Auckland, California on April 2, 2012, a total of seven people were killed, including six women.

Thirty-two people were killed when a 23-year-old Virginia Technical School student opened fire on campus on April 16, 2007. Then an armed man killed himself.

West Nickel Mines School

The shooting took place on October 2, 2006 at a one-room Amish school in a village in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. An armed man kidnapped and shot 10 girls, killing five before turning his weapon on himself.

Red Lake High School

A 16-year-old student killed his grandfather and fellow man at their home in Minnesota, then went to nearby Red Lake High School, where he killed five students, a teacher and a security guard, before shooting himself on March 22, 2005.

Columbine High School

The shooting at school and attempting to attack took place at Columbine High School in Colorado on April 20, 1999. Two students killed 12 of their classmates and one teacher.
