Osaka recently confirmed she will not play at the Australian Open, which she won in 2019 and 2021.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka announced on Wednesday that she is pregnant and added that she will return to competition in 2024. It happened a few days after she confirmed its decision not to compete in the Australian Open.
Osaka, a four-time major champion and former No. 1 ranked player, shared a photo of the sonogram and messages in English and Japanese on social media. She has been dating her boyfriend, American rapper Cordae, for years.
“I understand that life is so short and I don’t take any moment for granted, every day is a new happiness and adventure,” the 25-year-old wrote. “I know I have so much to look forward to in the future, I can’t wait for my kid to watch one of my matches and say to someone, ‘That’s my mom’ haha.”
Osaka, who won the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021, said she hoped to see her fans next year “because I’ll be at Aus 2024”. She did not reveal her due date or other information, but said she “can’t wait to get back on the court” and that 2023 will be a year of many lessons.
Osaka and Korde, a three-time Grammy Award nominee, have been publicly dating since 2019.
Osaka has not played since September after being eliminated in the second round in Tokyo. She won her first-round match at that tournament when Australia’s Daria Saville withdrew after one game with a knee injury.
Osaka is one of several high-profile athletes starting conversations about mental health in sports. She took a break after missing the 2021 French Open and later said she had struggled with depression and anxiety for several years.
