Matthew Shuler, executive director of the Ohio Casino Control Commission, issued the emergency order on Monday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio’s top gambling regulator has banned licensed sportsbooks in the state from accepting bets on baseball games in Alabama after a report warned of suspicious gambling activity.

Matthew Shuler, executive director of the Ohio Casino Control Commission, issued an emergency order on Monday that “immediately prohibits the acceptance of any bets on University of Alabama Baseball.” The order was the first according to ESPN.

The order, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, also said one of the “certified independent integrity monitors” reported the rates to the state.

Sports betting is legal in 33 states, and it was unclear if other states had issued similar orders.

“We are continuing to review this matter,” Ohio commission spokeswoman Jessica Franks said Tuesday.

ESPN reported that US Integrity, based in Las Vegas, sent out an alert to sports betting offices warning of “suspicious betting activity” related to Friday night’s Alabama-LSU game.

Alabama scored five runs in the ninth inning in an 8-6 loss on Friday night. LSU was ranked No. 1 in the major college baseball polls, while Alabama was unranked.

Officials at US Integrity, LSU and Alabama did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

According to its website, US Integrity tracks “data to see if discrepancies coincide with known events involving players or coaches, reveal misconduct in officiating, or suggest abuse of insider information.”

According to Baird Vogel, a California attorney with experience in sports betting, such bets often occur when there are huge last-minute changes in the odds, especially in a game where one team is significantly higher than the other. industry.

“In this case, I think the line moved very sharply and the game took a very strange turn when the trailing team started to make a huge run,” said Vogel, co-head of Eversheds Sutherland’s global sports practice. “It could be a guess, everything could be a coincidence. This is the miracle of sports betting. Sometimes strange things happen.”

Fanduel’s Sports Book there were no Alabama baseball games listed for betting on Tuesday.

“US Integrity is one of the best in the game, so if they flagged an anomaly and found a discrepancy or some unusual activity, it would be a good idea to listen to them,” Vogel said.
