COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohioans are answering the call for help in the state of Florida after Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc.

Last week, members of the more than 80-member Ohio Task Force 1 rushed to help.

People in Florida were rescued from what was left of their homes Saturday after this week’s hurricane.

“You have houses with roofs, broken walls. You have several boats that are sunk or half sunk,” said Jim O’Connor, chief of Task Force 1 in Ohio.

Two different groups were sent to help with the recovery. The first was sent on Wednesday. Another group was mobilized because the impact of the hurricane was so great.

O’Connor said Saturday that the team searched more than 1,400 buildings. So far they have conducted three rescues and 42 evacuations.

“We were on the water with boats on the waterfront and houses along the front,” he said.

Ohio State Task Force 1 told 10TV they are expected to be in Florida for 14 days.
