In 1848, Ellen Craft, an enslaved woman in Macon, Georgia, feared that her father — who was her white slave — would claim any child she bore as his own. And so she and her husband, also enslaved, pulled off a remarkable ruse: fleeing the South, she posed as a white male slave owner, accompanied by “her” slave. Correspondent Mark Whittaker talks to Ilion Wu, author of Slave Master, Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom, and Peggy Presley, the couple’s great-great-granddaughter.
