COLUMBUS, OH – Pickerington Central Devin Royal was named the 2023 Ohio Mr. Basketball by the Ohio Sports Writers Association on Wednesday.

Royal is the first player from Pickerington Central and the No. 12 Ohio State Buckeye to win the award.

In the course of nationwide voting, three points were awarded for first place, two for second place, and one for third place. The Royals scored 90 points to the Caps’ 87.

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy sophomore Darrin Peterson was third in the voting, followed by Columbus Africentric senior Daelyn Swain, Toledo Emanuel Christian sophomore Jerry Easter II, Caldwell senior Bede Lowry and Brecksville-Broadway Heights junior Luke Skoliak.

The Mr. Basketball Award was first presented by the Associated Press in 1988 and since 2017 has been voted on by the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association.

Royal, who led the Tigers to a state championship last year as a junior, has his team back in the state tournament this weekend when they face Centerville in the semifinals on Saturday.
