The next week will be filled with LGBTQ+ activism in Ohio, which could lead to disastrous legislative results. Here’s what you need to know.
HB 8 Hearing
On Tuesday, May 9, the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education will hear testimony from opponents of HB 8, the Parents’ Bill of Rights. If passed, the bill would force all teachers and school personnel — including social workers and school counselors — from LGBTQ+ students to their parents.
In April, the bill was amended to add “counseling services,” now requiring parental notification of anything a student shares during counseling.
Called the Dangerous Students Act. Equality of Ohiothis 4th hearing will feature testimony from opponents: those who oppose HB 8.
HB 6 Hearing (and possible vote)
On Wednesday, May 10, the House Committee on Higher Education will hold its fifth hearing on HB 6, the Women’s Sports Preservation Act. If passed, HB 6 would ban transgender girls and women from participating in athletics from kindergarten through college.
The committee was expected to vote on HB 6 last week, but some last-minute shuffling pushed the hearing to this week. Legislative experts say it will be a close vote, so sending to committee members by e-mail sharing your views can make a difference.
(Other) Drag Queen Story hour protest
Some truly awful chatter is circulating through far-right and neo-Nazi internet channels, threatening the upcoming Drag Queen History Hour at Cleveland’s Near West Theater on Saturday, May 13th.
It is also expected that there will be a presence of Umbrella patrola group that organizes peaceful protests to protect families from any hate from protesters.
Drag Queen Story Hour fans are encouraged to prioritize their safety in the face of these protesters, who have previously come to these events armed.
