The public charter school said additional spots will be offered for high school students for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.
TOLEDO, OH – Editor’s Note: Attached video from an unrelated story that aired on November 1, 2022.
The deadline for applications is January 27 Toledo School of Art (TSA), a public charter school focused on visual and performing arts education, is fast approaching. In 2021, the TSA announced that it would be able to accept more students after it expansion.
The downtown Toledo school serves more than 700 students in a college-prep program that includes classes in dance, music, theater and more. Although admission to the school is free, it is limited; there are more applicants than available places every year. To fairly account for the discrepancy, TSA uses a “credit lottery” to admit students.
How many places are open?
According to the TSA website, about 95 seats are usually offered for those entering the sixth grade. Space is limited for grades 7-12, as it depends on how many current TSA students choose to re-enroll for the next school year.
For the first time, TSA will accept 120 sixth-graders, and another 20 spots will be open to seventh- and eighth-graders.
Entry open to Ohio residents only.
How to apply?
Lottery applications are completed online at the TSA website. Applicants must submit all supporting documents no later than January 27, 2023 by 3:00 p.m. Supporting documents can be scanned and submitted electronically or dropped off at TSA between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
After applying for the lottery, a list of required documents will be generated for students. While each list may vary, expect to provide documents including immunization records, grades, proof of residency, birth certificates, etc.
Students entering grades 7-12 may be required to demonstrate that they have taken a substantial number of arts classes at their current school to qualify.
If the student’s application is accepted, they will receive a lottery number.
When will TSA release lottery results?
TSA will release lottery results on February 24, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. The lottery will determine who will be invited to Next Step Day and who is on the waiting list and at what position.
What is Next Step Day?
After the lottery drawing, TSA will invite students to a Next Step Day event to determine the student’s eligibility for TSA enrollment. The event is by invitation only, and school administrators schedule meetings on an individual basis.
Attendance at Next Step Day is required for admission if space becomes available; however, this does not guarantee admission. The purpose of Next Step Day is to assist in the scheduling process and determine the skill level of students.
According to the TSA website, more students than available seats are invited to ease the waiting process.
Additional information
TSA also hosts “First Fridays” for prospective students. These one-hour open houses showcase student art and offer a tour of the school. Click for more information here.
