City leaders are now allowing residents to start collecting two or three items of personal importance or medical items.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Since December, residents of Latitude Five25 could not go inside their units. The buildings were condemned by the city and asbestos was found everywhere.
Fast forward to March: City leaders are now allowing residents to start collecting two or three items of personal importance or medical items.
10TV spoke with Angelique Clark. She and her family were evicted from an apartment building and have since found a home on their own.
She told Latitude Five25 that she was trying to close that chapter of her life.
“I literally told myself to forget all of this,” she said. “Because the longer you hold on to hope, the harder it is to move on.”
She said it gives her a bad feeling and she still has a lot of unanswered questions.
The most important thing is when she and the others can get their things.
“My husband served for 15 years, there are his awards, there is a service weapon, there are the ashes of his daughter-in-law. “I have important papers there, I haven’t even been able to file my taxes,” Clark said.
10TV spoke with Tony Celebrese, the city’s deputy director of building and zoning.
“Asbestos medics started cleaning these devices by wiping these items,” Celebrese said.
The staging area is in the sports hall. He said residents should wait for city officials to contact them. He said that right now they can only take out a few items that are not clothing or have fabric material.
Next week, Celebrese said crews will do a deeper cleaning to remove more items from the units.
“It’s going to be slow for some people, because they may not get communication or calls from us right away,” he said.
“I’m going to open this book temporarily, but this is the chapter I moved on from,” Clark said.
If you have not yet been contacted by city officials, you are asked to call this number at 614-645-7125.
Saturday, April 1, is the next day residents can pick up items if they contact the city without an appointment. It is from 12:00 to 20:00
