TOLEDO, Ohio – If you’re looking for good Southern-style cooking, look no further than Ruby’s kitchen.
“The catfish, the peach cobbler, the sweet potato cheesecake—it’s wonderful. Chicken and dressing on Sunday is awesome,” said Ruby’s great-nephew Jarrell Drake.
“My favorite is banana pudding and they only have it on Sundays. And cornbread dressing, which is only eaten on Sundays,” said family friend Darryl Conley.
Located on Reynolds Road near Door Street, the restaurant has been serving customers for 20 years.
Some of them come almost as long as it is open.
“I’ve never had a bad experience, she treats me like a son. So I feel comfortable coming here and that’s why I keep coming,” said regular customer Stephen Parker.
For the Ruby family, this restaurant is a legacy.
“My aunt Ruby started this restaurant out of nowhere. She’s been dreaming about it since she was 12 years old,” Drake said.
And it’s a work ethic that is passed down to the family members who run the business.
They pride themselves on offering a family atmosphere made even better by the food.
“On Sundays you can expect all the preachers to eat here. They’re just laughing and having a good time and bringing their families,” Drake said. “Our family can give their family a delicious meal.”
Despite the fact that the restaurant is open only four days a week, this did not hinder the number of visitors.
“I have a barbershop here on Library Square, it used to be nearby. So I was there every day. Even though she’s around the corner now, I’m still here,” Parker said.
From ribs to pork legs, the Ruby family says there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.
“The food, I know, is made with love. Two decades, that speaks for itself, I’m very proud of them,” Conley said.
