Police urged anyone in the area to shelter in place after an “active shooter situation” was reported at a building in Atlanta’s Midtown neighborhood.
ATLANTA – One person was fatally wounded and at least three others were injured Wednesday in a shooting at a downtown Atlanta building. the police said.
Atlanta police said no additional shots have been fired since the first shooting erupted at the building on West Peachtree Street, between 12th and 13th streets, a commercial area with many office buildings and high-rise apartments. No suspects were in custody, and police said in an email just after 1 p.m. that it was an “active, fluid situation.”
In an email, police said they are actively searching for the suspect and other victims. Three victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, and the fourth person died at the scene.
The shooting comes at a time when cities around the US have been gripped by gun violence and mass shootings in 2023.
Police have released a photo of the man believed to be the shooter. The man was wearing dark pants and a light-colored hooded sweatshirt. They had masks on their faces and appeared to be carrying a bag on the front.
Authorities said the man is believed to be armed and dangerous and asked anyone with information about the man’s whereabouts to call 911.
Police urged anyone in the area to secure their buildings and shelter in place.
