The Ohio State Board of Education debated a resolution in response to President Biden’s amendment to Title IX, which protects transgender students from discrimination.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – This week, discussed by the Ohio Board of Education resolution regarding Title IX. This is in response to President Biden’s amendment to Title IX, which protects transgender students from discrimination. Stonewall Columbus, an LGBTQ+ organization, says their position is pretty clear.

“Ultimately, the proposal of this resolution really seemed to be harmful to young people at critical stages of their personal development and understanding of who they are,” said Denzil Portes, executive director of Stonewall Columbus.

The resolution requires districts to notify parents if their child wants to be identified by a different name, pronoun or other matter related to their gender identity. The proposal would also bar transgender women from joining women’s sports teams.

“When you find something that you’re passionate about, or that you love and enjoy, that’s important to who you are, and then suddenly someone tells you that you can’t be a part of it, it’s a bad feeling, it’s not a welcome place for staying,” Porteous said.

A major concern of Stonewall Columbus is the mental health of transgender youth. Project Trevor A 2022 national survey found that more than half of transgender youth had seriously considered attempting suicide. The Trevor Project also found in the study that transgender youth are about twice as likely to experience symptoms of depression, have serious suicidal thoughts, and attempt suicide compared to their cisgender LGBQ peers.

“When we think of someone who belongs in a space or feels like they belong in a space and they’re told they shouldn’t be in that space, that’s not a feeling of hospitality, they’re not welcome,” Porteous said.

How do school districts feel about it? 10 television was inside st Columbus Board of Education meeting this week, when the council formally opposed the resolution. They plan to sign their own resolution at the next meeting.

The Ohio Board of Education will meet again in October to hear more testimony and discuss the resolution.
