New Delhi: The government has ordered internet companies to block 67 pornographic websites following court orders and for violating the new IT rules that were issued in 2021.

In an email sent to ISPs, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked them to block 63 websites based on the Pune court order and to block 4 websites based on the Uttarakhand High Court order and directions issued by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY ).

“MeitY pursuant to the said order (of the Uttarakhand High Court) read with Rule 3(2)(b) of the Information Technologies (Interim Guidelines and Code of Ethics for Digital Media) Rules, 2021 and in view of some obscene material available on the below mentioned website defaming the modesty of women, has ordered the immediate removal (blocking) of … websites/URLs, – says the order of the Ministry of Defense dated September 24.

The 2021 IT Rules, cited by MeitY, require IT companies to remove or disable access to content hosted, stored or published by them that “shows such a person in complete or partial nudity or displays or depicts such a person in any sexual act or behavior,” as well as content that is allegedly simulated or artificially altered.
