COLUMBUS, Ohio — The world record holder for oldest dog now belongs to a Chihuahua from Ohio.

Spike, who is 23 years old, became the oldest dog in the world on December 7. He was born in November 1999.

Spike was found dumped in a grocery store parking lot in Preble County in August 2009. His owner, Rita Kimball, said she couldn’t leave him, according to the release Guinness Book of Records.

Kimball said she remembers him looking badly neglected, but after checking the store, it turned out the dog had no owners.

The release said Spike followed Kimball and her family to the car, jumping inside as soon as they opened the door. Since then, the dog, without wasting time, became part of their family.

Now, almost 14 years later, Spike still lives with Kimball on her farm. Part of his daily routine is spending time with cows, horses and cats.

Now weighing 12.9 pounds, he is nearly blind and hard of hearing and prefers to spend time with those closest to him.

Kimball told Guinness World Records that she thought he might be a world record holder when she saw a picture of Pebble, the former oldest living dog, a title holder who was younger than Spike.

Kimball said, “I believe he’s still here because after such a horrible life to begin with, he’s doing the best he can every day and now he’s seeing the rewards in his later years.”

The last record holder for the oldest living dog was Gina Vold, who was 22 years old.
