Facebook whistleblower launches nonprofit to tackle social media issues

(Reuters) – Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen has launched a nonprofit organization that will seek solutions to the harm social media creates, she said on Thursday.

A former product manager at Facebook, since renamed Meta Platforms, made headlines last year after becoming the source of thousands of leaked internal documents that she said detailed the social media company’s failure to protect teenage girls on Instagram and stop misinformation about vaccines. .

Facebook has consistently said it disagrees with Haugen’s characterization.

According to a press release, her nonprofit organization, Beyond the Screen, will create an open database to document how major tech companies are failing to fulfill their “ethical obligations to society” and outline possible solutions.

It will partner with Project Liberty, an organization working to create a new working protocol for social media, and Common Sense Media, which advocates for safe media content for children.
