COLUMBUS, OH – Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates and highlights the history, achievements and culture of people of Hispanic or Latino descent.

It is recognized from September 15 to October 15. September 15 marks the anniversary of independence from Spain for many Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

During the rest of the month, other countries such as Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence day.

Columbus Day, celebrated on October 12, falls within this 30-day window. But instead of celebrating Columbus, Spanish-speaking and Latin American countries celebrate what is known as “Día de la Raza,” which translates to “Day of the Race.” This holiday is dedicated to recognizing the cultural fusion of European and indigenous heritage in Latin America.

“Día de la Raza” is celebrated in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Hispanic Heritage was first nationally recognized as a weeklong holiday in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Twenty years later, it has evolved into a 30-day period celebrating Hispanic communities and achievements.

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations can vary by culture, but the main goal is to celebrate and shine a light on communities and their achievements.
