COLUMBUS, Ohio – A man has been charged after a 5-year-old shot himself in the head in the South Linden neighborhood on Sunday.

According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, Tayonte Diggs, 24, is charged with one count of child endangerment.

The Columbus Police Dept responded to the 1600 block of Kenmore Road, west of Joyce Avenue, for a report of a child injured in the leg.

When officers arrived, they found the boy had indeed been shot in the head, according to records.

Court documents say the child’s mother told police she had just arrived at her sister’s house to pick up her niece.

She said she had been there for about 10 minutes talking to her sister when she heard a single gunshot.

The mother said that she immediately ran to the room from where he was shot and found that the boy was bleeding from the head. The boy was taken to National Children’s Hospital and is in critical condition.

According to court records, Diggs, who is the sister’s boyfriend, was in the room with the boy.

Diggs fled the home before officers and paramedics arrived. He later returned to the scene and was taken into custody.
