In a recent study by NiceRx, Ohio ranked 8th on the list of US states with the highest rate of smoking-related deaths, with 171 deaths per 100,000 adults in the state in 2019.

Residents of Ohio and Kentucky continue to die in high numbers from diseases and health complications related to smoking.

In the recent research NiceRx Ohio ranked 8th on the US list of states with the highest number of smoking-related deaths, with 171 deaths per 100,000 adults in the state in 2019.

Ohio is also home to a high number of smokers overall, with 20.8%, according to research by NiceRx, which ranked Ohio as the 4th highest smoking state in the US.

However, Ohio ranks lower in both categories than Kentucky. Overall, Kentucky has the 2nd highest smoking rate, with 23.6% of its population self-reported as smokers. The state is just 0.2% lower than the #1 spot held by West Virginia.

Kentucky also had the 2nd highest number of smoking-related deaths behind West Virginia, despite the large difference in population. The study found that 197 per 100,000 adults will die from smoking-related causes in 2019.

NiceRx used World Population Review’s US state rankings to compile its findings. In addition, the organization used Tobacco Free Kids research to calculate data on smoking-related deaths.
