Telegram has reduced the monthly subscription fee to India for premium users – up to Rs 179 from Rs 469.

In a message sent to its users in the country, the platform announced the discount on the subscription fee as it targets aggressive growth in the country, where WhatsApp has nearly 500 million users.

India is one of the key markets for Telegram, which has amassed more than 700 million monthly active users worldwide.

According to third-party data, Telegram has more than 120 million users in India and is looking to tap into WhatsApp’s ever-growing user base.

According to a recent study by techARC, at least one in five respondents in India prefer Telegram over WhatsApp for various reasons, including its security and privacy, features like channels, allowing users in the same group, and sharing large files.

More than 32 percent of respondents said they send critical and confidential messages through Telegram.

Monthly Telegram subscriptions for premium users worldwide range from $4.99 to $6.

Last month, the encrypted messaging app released a new update that gave users more ways to use new emojis to express their feelings – with endless emoji reactions and statuses.

Premium users can choose reactions from an endless selection of custom emojis, the company said.

With the new update, group admins can control whether user reactions can be used in their groups.

Premium users can now add an animated emoji status that displays next to their name to quickly let everyone know how they’re feeling and what they’re up to.
