Two people were killed and six others were injured in stabbings on the Las Vegas Strip Thursday morning, and police said later in the day that a suspect had been arrested.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and the other at University Medical Center, according to a statement from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

The three victims are listed in critical condition, LVMPD Capt. Dory Coren said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. The other victims “appeared to be stable,” Coren said. The victims were locals and tourists, LVMPD Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said at another news conference later in the afternoon.

Police found a “large kitchen knife” at the scene, Coren said.

The stabbing began around 11:40 a.m. local time, police said. The first appeared unprovoked, LVMPD Deputy Chief James Larochelle said Thursday afternoon. After the first victim was stabbed, the suspect continued south on Las Vegas Boulevard, injuring several others, Larochelle said. The suspect then turned a corner and fled east, where he was followed by several “concerned citizens,” Larochelle said. The suspect was then taken into custody by hotel security and LVMPD officers.

Yoni Barrios, 32, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on two counts of open murder and six counts of attempted murder, court records showed. His first court appearance was scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Larochelle said the suspect was not a local resident.

Police said the scene was contained by around 1:50 p.m. local time. A portion of Las Vegas Boulevard remained closed so police could continue gathering evidence, Coren said.
