The Category 3 hurricane made landfall on the island’s west coast on Tuesday. Electricity supply to the country’s 11 million population is gradually being restored.

Havana, Cuba – Hurricane Jan on Tuesday knocked out power to all of Cuba and devastated some of the country’s most important tobacco farms when it slammed into the island’s western tip as a powerful hurricane.

Cuba’s Electric Union said in a statement that it was working to gradually restore service to the country’s 11 million residents from Tuesday evening until Wednesday morning. Initially, power was cut in the western provinces of Cuba, but then the entire grid collapsed.

The Category 3 hurricane made landfall on the island’s west coast on Tuesday. It devastated Pinar del Río province, where much of the tobacco used to make Cuba’s iconic cigars is grown.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated and others left the area ahead of Jan’s arrival, causing flooding, damaged homes and downed trees. Authorities are still assessing the damage, but no injuries have yet been reported.

Yan’s winds damaged one of Cuba’s most important tobacco farms in La Rabaina.

“It was apocalyptic, a real disaster,” Hirochi Robaino, the owner of the farm that bears his name and made internationally famous by his grandfather, wrote on social media. He published photos showing the ruins of farm buildings, overturned carts and firewood scattered everywhere.

State media reported that Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel visited the region most affected by the hurricane.
