LeBron James’ move to a professional pickleball team this week isn’t likely to put much strain on his pocket.

Los Angeles Laker star became a billionaire earlier this year due to his combination of real estate holdings, ownership in sports teams and numerous sponsorship and endorsement deals, according to Forbes estimate which pegged his net worth at $1.2 billion. James has been working on this milestone for almost ten years. In 2014 an interview with GQ, he said that he is working on maximizing his business ventures and that he would be happy to reach the billion dollar mark one day.

According to Forbes, James’ endorsements and business ventures have generated about $900 million in revenue. Then there’s basketball. James, who will begin his 20th NBA season next month, has played for three teams and earned $385 million in total salary on the court, according to Forbes. Most recently he signed a two-year contract from the Lakers for $97.1 million in a deal that made him the highest-paid NBA player in history, according to Bloomberg.

Forbes believes that 37-year-old James is the second highest-paid athlete in the world after Paris Saint-Germain footballer Lionel Messi.

The unnamed Major League Pickleball team isn’t James’ first dip into sports ownership. He bought a share in the British football club “Liverpool”. in 2011, and also appears a part owner of the Boston Red Sox.. Those investments make up about $90 million of his net worth, according to Forbes.

James said he was aspires to own an NBA team one day, which will also add wealth to him. However, James can’t do that until he leaves the league.

James has a long list of endorsements from companies including AT&T, Crypto.com, GMC, Pepsi, Rimowa and Walmart, according to Sporty. In 2015, he signed a lifetime endorsement contract with Nike, with whom James signed a $90 million contract before graduating high school.

James was also once a spokesperson for Blaze Pizza and even starred in commercials for the pizzeria. He now has a 10% ownership stake in the company, adding $30 million to his net worth, according to Forbes.

Among his other assets, James owns a TV and film production company called SpringHill, which he founded in 2020 with business partner Maverick Carter. The company helped create the cartoon “Space Jam 2”, in which James played the main role. SpringHill also produces a show for HBO Max called “The Shop: Uninterrupted,” which James occasionally hosts. Nike, Epic Games and others invested in SpringHill last October, helping push the production company forward estimated at $725 million.

Forbes also estimates that James owns three homes worth around $80 million — a mansion in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, another estate in Beverly Hills, California, and a third home in Los Angeles.
