Netflix is ​​building its own game studio in Finland

Netflix, which has also forayed into the gaming business, is building its own gaming studio in Helsinki, Finland.

With its game studio, the platform aims to create “world-class” original games without ads or in-app purchases, according to Engadget.

The report mentions that Zynga and EA alum Mark Lastik will serve as director.

According to Netflix, Helsinki is well-suited as home to some of the “best gaming talent” on the planet. This includes The Walking Dead Next Games mobile developer, which Netflix bought in March.

Netflix has acquired several developers, including Boss Fight and the creator of Oxenfree Night School Studio, but has yet to build a developer from scratch, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Netflix recently made Oxenfree available for free to its subscription users, more than six years after the game debuted on PC and five years after it debuted for iOS and Android users.

A report released last month said less than one percent of subscribers play its games.

Analytics company Apptopia estimates that an average of 1.7 million people play games daily, less than 1 percent of Netflix’s 221 million subscribers.

Netflix lost nearly a million subscribers in the second quarter after losing 200,000 subscribers during the first quarter — its first subscriber decline in more than a decade.
